Vaughan Gething emerged victorious in the Welsh Labour Party leadership contest held on Saturday, positioning him to become Wales’ first Black leader of its semi-autonomous government.
Gething, born to a Welsh father and a Zambian mother, is poised to make history as the first Black leader of a government in the United Kingdom and purportedly across Europe, as per his assertion.
In his triumphant speech, Gething remarked, “Today, we mark a significant moment in our nation’s narrative, a narrative we collectively craft,” emphasizing the milestone not only of his groundbreaking leadership but also the shift in generational perspectives.
He expressed a vision of leveraging this occasion as a catalyst for a more assured journey forward. Gething, presently serving as Welsh economy minister, narrowly edged out Education Minister Jeremy Miles in the race to succeed First Minister Mark Drakeford, who announced his intention to step down late last year pending the selection of his successor.
