DR Congo – Eight civilians were killed and 28 others were wounded during a UN peacekeeper attack on a supply convoy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s North Kivu province, according to a military governor.
The UN troops were firing “warning shots” during the incident, which occurred as the convoy was returning from a resupply mission near the capital city of Goma. The UN mission, MONUSCO, stated that four trucks were set on fire by assailants and three people died as peacekeepers and Congolese soldiers attempted to protect the convoy.
Lieutenant-General Constant Ndima the governor’s spokesperson announced that an investigation will be conducted. Despite being one of the largest and most expensive UN missions in the world, MONUSCO has faced criticism from residents for failing to address the numerous armed groups in the eastern DRC, including the M23 rebels.
