Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill

South Africa

The LGBTQIA+ community in South Africa has condemned Uganda’s proposed anti-homosexuality bill as a violation of human rights, with members attending a protest against the legislation at the country’s embassy in Tshwane.

The bill, which was passed by Uganda’s parliament earlier this year, would impose life imprisonment and even death sentences on queer individuals.

At the protest, EFF leader Julius Malema called on Ugandan President Yoweru Museveni not to sign the bill into law.

Ugandan human rights activist Papa Dee explained that he had left the country due to death threats based solely on his sexuality, and stressed that homosexuality is not a disease. The LGBTQIA+ community has pledged to continue advocating for the bill to be withdrawn.
