Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has approved one of the world’s most stringent anti-LGBTQ legislations, disregarding condemnations from Western nations and the possibility of sanctions from aid donors.
Although same-sex relationships were already illegal in Uganda, along with more than 30 other African countries, the new law expands the scope of criminalization.
It introduces the death penalty for certain actions, such as engaging in homosexual activities that result in the transmission of terminal illnesses like HIV/AIDS. Additionally, it mandates a 20-year prison term for “promoting” homosexuality.
Clare Byarugaba, a Ugandan rights activist, remarked, “Today, the Ugandan president has effectively sanctioned state-sponsored homophobia and transphobia. This is a profoundly disheartening and somber day for the LGBTIQ community, our allies, and the entire nation of Uganda.”
