Trooping the Colour Risks for King Charles

This weekend, King Charles will participate in the Trooping the Colour parade, showcasing a departure from his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. The parade, commemorating King Charles’ 75th birthday, will witness the monarch opting for horseback, breaking a tradition of over 30 years where a monarch has not ridden at Trooping the Colour. This decision may raise some concerns.

In 1986, when Queen Elizabeth II was 60 years old (15 years younger than King Charles is now), she ceased riding a horse during the parade. Since then, she chose to be driven in a carriage, although it was believed that she continued horse riding well into her eighties.

King Charles’ choice to partake in the parade on horseback carries potential risks. Despite being an accomplished rider, the expected temperatures of around 26 degrees Celsius pose a challenge as horseback riding is physically demanding. Last weekend, some soldiers fainted due to the heat while being reviewed by Prince William in preparation for the event.

During the review ceremony, which involved hundreds of horses and soldiers performing intricate battlefield drill maneuvers accompanied by military music in 28-degree sunshine, the weighty uniforms caused several individuals to faint. Prince William expressed his admiration for the participants via Twitter, commending their performance under difficult conditions.

Apart from the heat, King Charles has an additional concern related to his notoriously problematic back. Horse riding could potentially worsen his condition.
