The Oscars this year

Cillian Murphy has made history by becoming the first actor born in Ireland to win the Best Actor award, as “Oppenheimer” triumphed at the Oscars.

The movie swept the ceremony, claiming victories in categories such as Best Picture, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr.

Murphy received acclaim for his portrayal of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, earning him the title of Best Leading Actor.

Expressing his gratitude, Murphy expressed being “overwhelmed” by the win, emphasizing his pride as an Irishman. He thanked Christopher Nolan and producer Emma Thomas for leading him on an extraordinary journey of creativity and excitement.

Acknowledging the cast and crew, Murphy credited their support throughout the filmmaking process. He dedicated the award to peacemakers worldwide, highlighting the impact of Oppenheimer’s legacy on the world.

The Oscars ceremony saw “Oppenheimer” securing a total of seven awards, with “Poor Things” and “The Zone of Interest” also claiming victories.

Robert Downey Jr. clinched the Best Supporting Actor award for his portrayal of US government official Lewis Strauss in “Oppenheimer”. In his acceptance speech, he humorously thanked his troubled past and the Academy. Reflecting on his personal journey, he credited his wife Susan Downey for her unwavering support and credited her for his recovery.

Downey Jr. concluded by emphasizing the significance of their craft and the importance of their creative decisions.
