Taxi Protest in Eastern Cape, South Africa

In Mthatha, Eastern Cape, an ongoing taxi protest has led to severe transport disruptions. Minibus taxi operators have hijacked several trucks, using them to block both the N2 highway and the R61 road in multiple areas around the town.

As a result, all major entry and exit points to Mthatha have been affected, impacting the flow of goods and services.  The situation remains tense, and law enforcement is on the ground to restore normalcy.

Last week’s clampdown by authorities followed a deadly shootout between two warring taxi factions in Maclear, where three taxi operators lost their lives. . The Eastern Cape government is working to address the situation and ensure public safety during this challenging time.
