A potent earthquake struck Taiwan on Wednesday, claiming the lives of at least seven individuals and injuring over 700 others. The quake inflicted damage on numerous buildings and triggered tsunami warnings reaching Japan and the Philippines, though these were subsequently lifted.
Authorities noted that this was the most severe earthquake to rock the island in decades and cautioned about the possibility of further tremors in the coming days.
Wu Chien-fu, director of the Seismology Center at Taipei’s Central Weather Administration, remarked, “The earthquake occurred near the coastline and was relatively shallow, being felt across Taiwan and its surrounding offshore islands.”
Despite the severity of the quake, Taiwan’s strict building regulations and widespread public awareness of disaster protocols seem to have prevented a major catastrophe for the earthquake-prone island, situated close to the convergence of two tectonic plates.
