The UCT Student Representative Council (SRC) has urged students to close down the campus as the university began its academic program for the year today. This resulted in hundreds of students congregating on the Graca Machel lawns, where the SRC addressed concerns related to registration and residences.
Although academic activities proceeded as scheduled at the upper campus, where all lectures were being held, the SRC students used the gathering as an opportunity to speak to the crowd about the difficulties some students were experiencing with registration and admission to residences.
According to Azola Mvimbi, a UCT student, the gathering was marked by singing and dancing. Meanwhile, the UCT SRC issued a short statement saying that the campus had been closed and academic activities suspended, with a call to stand in solidarity. Earlier today, UCT had notified staff and students of disruptions at the upper and lower campuses.
