At the end of April, South African Starlink users will see their satellite internet services terminated due to a breach of the company’s terms and conditions, according to Elon Musk’s company. Starlink operates a vast fleet of low Earth orbit satellites, offering high-speed, low latency internet connectivity globally.
However, Starlink was unable to secure a license to operate in South Africa from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa), citing non-compliance with local ownership regulations. The Electronic Communications Act mandates that 30% of the company must be owned by historically disadvantaged groups, encompassing black individuals, youth, women, and people with disabilities. Gquma reports that approximately 14,000 locals are utilizing Starlink “illegally” through roaming packages.
