South African authorities are currently in search of a missing charter boat captain amid growing concerns of possible foul play. The captain, John Matambu, and an unidentified individual who hired him, failed to return to Sodwana Bay on South Africa’s northeastern coast after setting out early Saturday morning. Their vessel, the Magnum Too, was discovered burned and abandoned on a beach in Mozambique, approximately 170 kilometers (105 miles) away from its departure point. Despite extensive search efforts, neither Matambu nor his passenger have been located.

The National Sea Rescue Institute, which initiated the search, expressed worries about the circumstances surrounding the disappearance. Matambu’s cousin mentioned the discovery of a petrol canister and a medical kit near the boat. Additionally, the NSRI noted suspicious details, such as the use of false contact information by the individual who chartered the boat. While there is hope for a resolution without foul play, all possibilities are being investigated.

The NSRI received reports that the boat was seen heading north towards Mozambique on Saturday night, the last sighting before it was found burnt the following day. Both the Police Sea Borderline Control agency and the Police Search and Rescue unit are collaborating in the search effort. Matambu, described as a well-known and respected boat captain in Sodwana Bay, is believed to have significant experience in maritime activities.
