South African PeaceKeeper Shot

Congo

The United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Monusco, has stated that it is collaborating with local authorities to hold accountable those responsible for a helicopter attack that resulted in the death of a South African peacekeeper.

The attack took place in the city of Goma, located in North Kivu province, when the UN helicopter was fired upon on Sunday. The helicopter had departed from Beni and was landed safely in Goma by another soldier who was injured in the attack.

Monusco expressed its condolences to the deceased peacekeeper’s family and emphasized that attacks on helicopters bearing the UN emblem are considered a war crime.

The South African National Defence Force is still in the process of informing the families of the soldiers involved, according to spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini.
