South Africa Tottenham Deal Cancelled

South Africa’s Democratic Alliance (DA) has applauded the decision made by Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille to cancel the R900 million ($55 million) sponsorship deal with English football club, Tottenham Hotspur.

De Lille cited non-compliance with SA Tourism’s procurement processes and the fact that certain procedures were not followed as reasons for the deal’s cancellation.

The Daily Maverick had earlier reported that the Department of Tourism was considering the sponsorship deal to promote tourism in the country. DA Member of Parliament Manny de Freitas called for relevant stakeholders to be held accountable, and for the R900 million to be redirected to refurbish tourist attractions in order to attract new tourism.
