South Africa- No electricity and Water

South Africa – Already struggling with daily power outages, is now facing water shortages as well, as the electricity disruptions have affected the supply system.

A recent power failure at a pump station supplying water to Johannesburg and Pretoria caused taps to run dry, according to Rand Water, the provincial utility. This has added to the frustration of residents who have been dealing with blackouts and having to plan their daily activities around them. The situation has sparked protests, with locals taking to the streets to demonstrate their frustration.

The root cause of the crisis lies in the country’s debt-laden state energy firm Eskom, which provides 90% of the country’s electricity but has struggled to keep up with demand and maintain its aging infrastructure.

The situation has been exacerbated by theft and vandalism, as well as the impact of constant power outages on the machinery, causing accelerated breakdowns. The government is working with water utilities to improve the situation, but acknowledges the energy crisis is having a major impact on the water infrastructure.
