Samsung Electronics workers have initiated a three-day general strike in South Korea, demanding better pay and benefits.
The strike is a response to the company’s failure to meet workers’ demands, including a rejected 5.1 percent pay raise offer from Samsung. The union, representing tens of thousands of employees, has been negotiating with management since January, but talks broke down.
The strike could potentially affect memory chip production, as Samsung Electronics is the world’s largest memory chip maker. Thousands of workers gathered outside the company’s facilities in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, to voice their discontent.
The National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU) leads the strike, with more than 30,000 members participating. Union leaders warn of further strikes if the gridlock continues. This collective action marks a significant moment in Samsung’s history, and workers are determined to make their voices heard.
