The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has confirmed that South Africa has requested additional emergency measures against Israel concerning its actions in Gaza. South Africa’s application highlights concerns about the dire situation facing Palestinians in Gaza, including the threat of starvation. They have urged the court to compel all parties to cease hostilities and release hostages and detainees.
In a statement released by the South African presidency on Wednesday, it emphasized the urgency of the situation, stressing that the people of Gaza cannot afford to wait. The statement expressed the need for immediate action from the ICJ to prevent an impending tragedy, especially regarding the protection of rights under the Genocide Convention.
South Africa’s request to the ICJ also includes an appeal for Israel to take urgent and effective measures to provide essential services and humanitarian assistance to address the famine and starvation crisis in Gaza. Given the extreme urgency of the situation, South Africa has called for the ICJ to implement these measures without delay or the need for additional hearings.
