Riots in Kenya leave some people dead

June 25, 2024 Protests erupted over a controversial new finance bill that introduces unpopular tax proposals. Impact: Clashes between police and demonstrators resulted in at least five deaths. The Kenyan parliament was set on fire after protesters opposed the new tax laws. Gunshots and tear gas were used during the protests in Nairobi and other parts of Kenya. Kenyan President William Ruto blamed the clashes on “criminals” who he says “hijacked” the protests. He vowed a “full response” to the violence1. The situation remains tense, and authorities are closely monitoring developments.
