The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has summoned the leading supermarket chains in the country to discuss their efforts in replenishing their stocks of salad items, as the produce shortage in the country persists for a third week.
On Monday, the bosses of major grocers will meet with Food and Farming Minister Mark Spencer. In response to disrupted harvests in southern Europe and northern Africa due to unseasonable weather, Lidl GB, along with Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, and Aldi, have imposed customer purchase limits on tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers.
While Lidl GB still has good availability across most of its stores, it has observed a recent surge in demand. The crisis has been exacerbated by decreased winter production in greenhouses in the UK and the Netherlands because of high energy costs, resulting in pictures of empty fruit and vegetable shelves circulating on social media. Spencer remarked that the crisis has highlighted Britain’s reliance on specific trade routes for certain types of food.
