Marta Cox has expressed her intention to refrain from representing Panama in future matches following remarks made by the president of Panama’s football federation (FEPAFUT), who criticized her weight and physical condition.
Manuel Arias made these comments after Cox voiced concerns about the inadequate facilities in Panama following the team’s elimination from the Concacaf W Gold Cup last month.
The players’ union Fifpro denounced the president’s remarks as “unacceptable.”
Cox, a midfielder who currently plays for Tijuana in Mexico’s Liga MX Femenil, stated, “If this kind of situation continues, I will choose not to participate in the national team anymore.” She added, “Certain words used to describe me were hurtful and completely unexpected.”
The 26-year-old made history by scoring Panama’s first Women’s World Cup goal last summer with a remarkable 35-yard free-kick during their 6-3 loss to France.
