Planned Strike at UCT

CAPE TOWN – The Academics’ Union at the University of Cape Town announced that it may only go on strike on Friday this week.

This comes after the union requested a certificate for employees to strike due to a salary dispute from the CCMA on Friday of last week.

UCT management claims that negotiations are underway to prevent a planned staff strike over pay.

For the first time in the history of the organization, at least 84% of the union’s members decided to strike.

The university is willing to increase pay by 3%, but the union wants 6%.

This comes as tertiary institutions prepare to reopen next month.
