During a flight operated by two Indonesian Airlines pilots, an alarming incident unfolded as both pilots fell asleep while the aircraft was in mid-flight, causing it to veer off course.
On the initial leg of the journey from Jakarta to Kendarithe, the co-pilot informed the pilot of his inadequate sleep, prompting the pilot to allow him to take a nap.
On the return flight to Jakarta, the pilot then requested the co-pilot to take over while he rested.
Unfortunately, during this period, the co-pilot also succumbed to sleep at an altitude of 36,000 feet, with 153 passengers and four flight attendants onboard.
Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee reported that air traffic control lost communication with the drifting aircraft.
After 28 minutes had passed, the pilot awoke and discovered the plane off its intended flight path.
Thankfully, there were no injuries resulting from the incident, but both pilots have been suspended pending further investigation.
