Cape Town, South Africa – The departure of Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, the current vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Town (UCT), is being delayed due to a disagreement between her and the university council regarding the content of the media statement.
According to three sources familiar with the situation, Phakeng is insisting on being “exonerated” in the announcement, but this is at odds with the council’s position. The council has decided to continue with an independent investigation into allegations of poor governance and misleading the senate regarding the departure of deputy vice-chancellor Lis Lange.
The investigation will also consider a report by former university ombudsman Zetu Makamandela-Mguqulwa, which detailed numerous allegations of bullying against Phakeng. A settlement agreement signed by Phakeng did not include any mention of exoneration.
