In Lima, Peru, LGBTQ+ organizations are protesting a recent government decree that categorizes transsexualism as a “mental disorder.”

On May 10, the Peruvian government revised its catalog of health conditions eligible for insurance coverage, which has included mental health treatment benefits since 2021, to encompass services for transgender individuals.

The decree issued by the health ministry refers to the condition as a “mental disorder,” a classification that has been discarded by the World Health Organization.

A protest is scheduled in Lima for Friday, coinciding with the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia.
