Namibia
The descendants of the victims of the 1904 to 1908 genocide in Namibia are calling on Germany to directly discuss reparations with them. The Herero and Nama people have taken their government to court for negotiating an agreement without their consent.
They reject the apology made in 2021 after years of talks between Namibia and Germany as it does not fully address the consequences of the genocide. The government’s declaration, which included a pledge of €1.1bn in development projects over 30 years, was deemed insufficient by the tribes who want direct reparations to address the poverty and marginalization resulting from the genocide.
The Herero and Nama people were subjected to a campaign of killing and torture during the German empire and are now politically marginalized minorities in Namibia.
