Mozambican authorities were in a frantic search on Thursday for survivors of a shipwreck that claimed the life of at least one person and left eight others missing to the south of the capital, Maputo.
The National Maritime Institute of Mozambique (Inamar) reported that an illegal fishing vessel, carrying 12 individuals, encountered difficulties while navigating the waters near the southern Matutuine region on Wednesday morning.
While the exact causes of the incident remained unclear initially, officials suggested that the crew panicked when the vessel began taking on water, ultimately leading to its capsizing.
The wreckage of the ship had washed up on a beach in the vicinity.
Odete Muianga from Inamar stated that rescuers located two survivors on Wednesday and retrieved a third from the waters the following day.
However, eight additional crew members remained missing at sea, with hopes of locating them alive dwindling.
