Missing Sub: Rescue Underway

OceanGate Expeditions, a company specializing in deep-sea exploration using manned submarines, is currently facing the unfortunate situation of a missing submarine. This particular submersible, owned by OceanGate, has been known for its unique features and was prominently advertised for its ability to transport tourists to the wreckage of the RMS Titanic at a price of $250,000 per seat.

Located approximately 400 miles southeast of the Newfoundland coast, the Titanic sank in April 1912 and rests on the ocean floor to this day. OceanGate recently stated on their website and social media platforms that their expedition to the shipwreck was “underway,” presenting it as an extraordinary opportunity for individuals to escape their everyday lives and embark on a remarkable journey. In addition to the ongoing expedition, the company had planned two more trips to the Titanic for the following summer.

OceanGate has confirmed that the missing submarine belongs to them and has initiated a rescue operation to locate and recover it. The company is actively exploring all available options to ensure the safe return of the crew. The number of individuals on board the submarine has not been specified.

According to Andrew Von Kerens, a spokesperson for OceanGate, the company has been unable to establish communication with the submersible, which was exploring the Titanic wreck site. They are hopeful for the safe return of both the crew and passengers and will provide updates as they become available.

The submarine is equipped with emergency oxygen and has the capability to sustain its occupants for up to 96 hours in case of an emergency. As of Monday afternoon, it was estimated that somewhere between 70 to the full 96 hours of sustainment were still available.

Hamish Harding, a 59-year-old British billionaire, businessperson, and explorer, was confirmed to be on board the missing submarine. He had publicly announced his decision to join the Titanic shipwreck expedition. Hamish is associated with Action Aviation, and the company has confirmed his presence on the submarine. Efforts are being made to facilitate a rescue mission, and there are provisions on board for survival in case of such an event. The British government is in contact with Harding’s family and is prepared to assist in search and rescue operations.

Shahzada Dawood, a British-Pakistani businessman, his son Suleman, French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions, were also confirmed to be on board the vessel. The Coast Guard has not disclosed the identities of any other individuals on the missing submarine at this time. The Dawood family, part of the Dawood Group, a longstanding global business conglomerate based in Pakistan, has issued a statement confirming their family members’ participation in the expedition and requesting prayers for their safety while also respecting the family’s privacy during this difficult period.
