Meta announced on Tuesday that it was investigating extensive outages affecting its Facebook, Instagram, and Threads platforms, resulting in users worldwide being unable to access their accounts.
“We are aware that people are experiencing difficulties accessing our services. We are actively addressing this issue,” stated Meta spokesperson Andy Stone in a communication on X platform.
According to reports from the DownDetector website, the number of complaints about Facebook being inaccessible reached a peak of approximately 500,000 at 10:30 am US East Coast time (1530 GMT), while Instagram received around 70,000 reports during the same period.
Threads, introduced as a competitor to Twitter in 2023, also encountered reports of disruptions, although WhatsApp, Meta’s messaging service, appeared unaffected.
Facebook’s status page, primarily for advertisers, indicated “major disruptions” on the site and assured that engineering teams were diligently working to resolve the issue promptly.
Users attempting to log in to Facebook found themselves unable to access their accounts even with the correct password, while mobile Instagram users experienced unrefreshed feeds.
With three billion active monthly users, Facebook remains the largest social media platform globally, while Instagram boasts approximately 1.35 billion users according to the latest data available.
