Jerry Springer, the iconic TV host known for his wild and raucous show, has passed away at the age of 79 after a months-long battle with pancreatic cancer. He died peacefully at his home in Chicago, surrounded by his family, according to a spokesman for his relatives. Springer’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success, whether in politics, broadcasting, or just joking with people on the street. He was known for his humor and intellect, and his family said that his “heart and humor” will live on.
Springer hosted “The Jerry Springer Show” for 27 years, during which he captured America’s screens with outrageous guests fighting and engaging in expletive-filled rants that were often bleeped out. He called it “escapist entertainment,” while others saw it as contributing to a decline in American social values. Despite the criticism, his show remained popular in the 90s, and he became America’s guilty pleasure for wild and raucous TV moments.
Aside from his entertainment career, Springer had a wide-ranging political career that included becoming the mayor of Cincinnati in 1977. He even considered a run for Ohio state governor. On his Twitter profile, he jokingly referred to himself as the “ringmaster of civilization’s end.” He also contended that the people on his show volunteered to be subjected to whatever ridicule or humiliation awaited them. His audience would cheer his name, and he often told people, tongue in cheek, that he hoped they would never be on his show.
