The incident occurred in the village of Rati Bhanpur in the Hathras area of central India’s Uttar Pradesh state
The stampede happened during a “satsang,” which is a prayer meeting hosted by a Hindu guru known locally as Bhole Baba. Thousands of devotees crowded under tents to listen to his address, and panic ensued, leading to the stampede.
At least 116 people were killed, with most of the victims being women. Many others were injured and rushed to hospitals in the region.
Authorities are investigating the incident, and residents have expressed anger, alleging that proper arrangements were not made for the large gathering held amid hot and humid conditions.
Stampedes at religious events in India are unfortunately not uncommon, often due to inadequate safety measures and crowd control.
