An Icelandic volcano has erupted for the fourth time within a span of three months, marking the most forceful eruption to date.
The eruption commenced shortly before 8:30 pm local time on Saturday and is currently ongoing, although scientists anticipate its activity may be waning.
When the eruption commenced, hundreds of visitors were evacuated from the Blue Lagoon thermal spa, a prominent tourist destination in Iceland, as reported by national broadcaster RUV.
Situated a few kilometers northeast of Grindavik, a coastal town with a population of 3,800, approximately 50 kilometers southwest of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, the eruption prompted authorities to instruct residents of Grindavik to evacuate their homes.
Despite its proximity, Keflavik International Airport, Iceland’s primary international airport, located just 20 km north of the eruption site, remains operational, with flights continuing to arrive and depart. However, the roads surrounding Grindavik have been closed.
