Google Fined in France

Google has been fined €250m in France for violating an intellectual property agreement. The watchdog accuses the US tech giant of failing to negotiate in good faith with publishers regarding the use of their content online.

France’s competition authority imposed the fine, citing breaches related to intellectual property rules concerning news media publishers and expressing concerns about Google’s AI service.

The regulator revealed that Google’s AI-powered chatbot Bard, now rebranded as Gemini, was trained on content from publishers and news agencies without their prior notification.

In a statement, the competition authority stated that the fine was for Google’s failure to uphold commitments made in 2022 and accused the company of lacking good faith in negotiations with news publishers regarding compensation for the use of their content.

Google did not contest the facts as part of settlement proceedings, according to the watchdog,
