Escaped Prisoner arrested in Tanzania

The re-arrest of Thabo Bester and his partner Dr Nandipha Magudumana in Tanzania has been welcomed by the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru). South African Crime Intelligence officers reportedly tracked Bester to Tanzania and monitored him before his arrest.

Bester, Magudumana, and a Mozambican national were arrested in Arusha while reportedly en route to Kenya. Popcru spokesperson Richard Mamabolo acknowledged the arrests but expressed disappointment that they did not occur within South Africa. Mamabolo called for thorough investigations into the circumstances of the orchestrated escape.

Additionally, Mamabolo revealed that the security company G4S, responsible for the Mangaung Correctional Center where Bester was imprisoned, had claimed Bester had died in his cell the previous week.
