The Turkish government has reported 2,921 casualties in the aftermath of massive earthquakes that hit its southeast region bordering Syria. Additionally, 1,444 fatalities have been recorded in Syria.
The earthquakes, which had initial magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.6, caused buildings to collapse while people were asleep and resulted in numerous aftershocks.
The US Geological Survey stated that the first earthquake originated approximately 33km away from Gaziantep, a prominent city in Turkey.
Despite adverse weather conditions, various nations have pledged assistance with the ongoing search and rescue efforts.
