Danger to Health Alcohol Mixed with Energy Drinks

Health experts have advised against combining alcohol and energy drinks, claiming that doing so is harmful.

The specialists who issued the warning claimed that young people in the society frequently engage in the behavior.

Tanimola Akande, a professor of public health at the University of Ilorin, said in an interview that people who mixed alcohol and energy drinks were more likely to report unwanted or unsafe sex than people who did not.

According to Prof. Akande, mixing alcohol and energy drinks is a risky behavior that is becoming more common in our society. Caffeine, plant-based stimulants, simple sugar, and other ingredients are commonly found in energy drinks.

The Prof explained that when alcohol is mixed with caffeine, the caffeine can mask the depressant effects of alcohol, making drinkers feel more alert than they would otherwise.

“As a result, they may drink more alcohol and become more impaired than they realise, increasing the risk of alcohol-attributable harms. The consumption of energy drinks that contain or are mixed with alcohol may mask the signs of impairment and increase the risk of injury.”
