Cyclone Gabrielle Hits New Zealand

New Zealand –

Cyclone Gabrielle has caused widespread power outages and disrupted travel across northern New Zealand, affecting approximately 46,000 homes.

Warnings have been issued for heavy rainfall and strong winds, leading to the cancellation of numerous flights.

In response to the impending storm, several areas have declared a state of emergency, and the government is considering declaring a national state of emergency, a rare move in the country’s history.

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins acknowledged that this extreme weather event comes just weeks after Auckland and nearby areas were hit by a record-breaking rainfall that resulted in floods and four fatalities. He stated that the situation is likely to worsen before it improves and announced an aid package of NZ$11.5 million.

Emergency Management Minister Kieran McAnulty informed the media during a briefing that five northern regions, including Auckland, have already declared a state of emergency, giving local authorities greater authority to respond to emergencies and provide aid by restricting travel.
