Following its impact in Madagascar, Cyclone Freddy is anticipated to make landfall in the central and southern regions of Mozambique on Friday. The storm, which weakened after passing through Madagascar, is predicted to pick up momentum as it traverses the Mozambique Channel en route to the African mainland.
The affected areas in Mozambique are located over 500 kilometres north of the capital, Maputo, and may also affect Zimbabwe. Mozambique has issued a red alert to mobilize emergency preparedness measures.
In Madagascar, Cyclone Freddy caused five deaths, affected more than 16,700 individuals, and resulted in the flooding or destruction of approximately 4,500 homes. Despite initial concerns about the extent of the damage, the cyclone left less devastation than anticipated.
