Contractors Arrested for Stealing Cables

In the south of Johannesburg, two contractors working for City Power, who were responsible for repairing incidents of cable theft, have been arrested for allegedly stealing electricity cables.

The theft of cables in the Eikenhof area has caused prolonged power outages for residents in Naturena and surrounding areas. According to City Power’s Isaac Mangena, the suspects were caught on Friday night with a 10-meter long cable, which they had cut and stolen from a trench while working.

Further investigations revealed that additional cable had already been stolen and sold before the arrest. City Power CEO Tshifularo Mashava praised the apprehension of the suspects and stated that the security measures implemented by the company are proving effective.

However, she expressed concern that some contractors may be involved in the cable theft syndicate and did not rule out the possibility of internal employees’ involvement in some of the thefts.
