During a visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), French President Emmanuel Macron was urged by President Felix Tshisekedi to pursue international sanctions against Rwanda for its alleged support of M23 rebels. Macron responded by stating that he would wait for ongoing peace negotiations to conclude before considering such measures.
However, he pledged France’s commitment to defending the integrity and sovereignty of the DRC. For years, armed groups have been competing for control of the region’s abundant mineral resources, leading to conflict in the eastern part of the country.
The DRC has accused Rwanda of supporting M23 rebels, who have taken control of significant portions of the eastern region, but Rwanda has repeatedly denied these allegations.
