The Kremlin announced on Tuesday that it is actively monitoring Western intelligence activities after the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) released a video urging Russians to establish contact through a secure online channel. The video, posted on the CIA’s official YouTube channel and the widely used Telegram messaging app in Russia, was accompanied by a message expressing the agency’s interest in hearing from individuals such as military personnel, intelligence experts, diplomats, scientists, and those with knowledge about Russia’s economy and leadership.
The video, appearing approximately 15 months into Moscow’s conflict with Ukraine, presents a significant risk for Russians who choose to engage with it. President Vladimir Putin has previously cautioned his fellow citizens to be vigilant against traitors, and just last month, the parliament voted to increase the punishment for treason against the state from 20 years to life imprisonment.
The video showcases various individuals contemplating their decisions, symbolizing heroism and resilience. The narrator’s voice emphasizes the prevalence of deception and the importance of acknowledging the reality we live in and discuss privately. Towards the end of the video, a man and a woman are depicted with their fingers poised over mobile phone screens, offering a link to “Contact CIA.”
Concluding the video, the narrator asserts, “This is my Russia. This will always be my Russia. I will endure. My family will endure. We will live with dignity because of my actions.”
