Chicken Shortage

SOUTH AFRICA – Power outages have made it difficult for Astral Foods, South Africa’s largest poultry producer, to meet the demand for chicken at fast food establishments.

Astral Foods has acknowledged supply issues following the temporary closure of many KFC locations due to chicken shortages, while other KFC franchises reduced their menu options.

According to Astral Foods, other fast food establishments had their operations disrupted.

The poultry manufacturer claimed that because of power outages, it had incurred a direct loss of R126 million in the fiscal year that ended in September 2022.

The group predicted that market conditions will worsen as a result of ongoing power outages.
