On June 26, 2024, General Juan José Zúñiga, the commander of the Bolivian Army, attempted a coup d’état. His troops seized Plaza Murillo in La Paz, the country’s administrative capital, and stormed the Casa Grande del Pueblo, the presidential palace.
The coup attempt followed President Luis Arce’s decision to relieve Zúñiga from his post due to alleged threats he had made against former president Evo Morales. Arce personally confronted Zúñiga, leading to his immediate dismissal along with the heads of the Air Force and Navy.
The new Army commander, José Wilson Sánchez, ordered troops back to their barracks, and the coup attempt received widespread international condemnation
