Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has arrived in Saudi Arabia to participate in the Arab League summit on May 19, 2023. This marks his first visit to the country since the start of the war in Syria. The invitation to the summit and Syria’s recent reinstatement to the Arab League indicate a growing acceptance and rehabilitation of Assad in the region.
Saudi Arabia was previously a supporter of armed opposition groups aiming to overthrow Assad during the war. However, the country has shifted its stance in recent months, calling for dialogue to resolve the conflict. This change in position aligns with Saudi Arabia’s efforts to improve relations with Iran and work towards peace in the Middle East.
The process of reintegrating Syria into the Arab community began in 2018 when the United Arab Emirates restored ties with Damascus. The devastating earthquakes in northern Syria and southern Turkey further accelerated the reconciliation, leading to an influx of aid from the region.
The improved relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran are expected to have positive impacts on other Middle Eastern countries where they support rival factions. Additionally, Saudi Arabia’s moves towards ending its involvement in the Yemen war demonstrate a broader push for regional stability.
