In Rio de Janeiro, a Supreme Court judge in Brazil has initiated an investigation against Elon Musk following his criticism of the magistrate and accusations of censorship for the blocking of social media accounts suspected of disseminating disinformation.
According to a document obtained by AFP, Judge Alexandre de Moraes accused the owner of Platform X of “criminal exploitation” of the platform.
The judge stated that “Platform X must comply with judicial orders, including the blocking of an account as ordered by the Supreme Court.” Moraes warned that the world’s wealthiest individual could face a fine of approximately $20,000 for each reinstated account.
Moraes has previously issued orders to suspend Twitter accounts suspected of spreading disinformation.
“The judge emphasized that social networks are subject to laws,” he wrote in capital letters in his order.
Starting Saturday evening, Musk used Platform X, formerly known as Twitter which he acquired in 2022, to launch a series of criticisms against Moraes.
“This judge has repeatedly and blatantly violated the Brazilian constitution and its people. He should resign or face impeachment,” posted the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX.
In response to Moraes’s threat of significant fines and “blocking access” to the platform, Musk posted, “We may lose all revenue in Brazil and be forced to close our office there.”
